PBA: Rain or Shine runs roughshod over sloppy Meralco Bolts, forges game three

(Updated 10:37pm) The Rain or Shine Elasto Painters made it two for two for the teams that had their backs against the wall with a 102-93 win over the Meralco Bolts, Wednesday night at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

After the San Mig Super Coffee Mixers defeated the Alaska Aces, the Elasto Painters made sure their series will also be extended to a do-or-die game three in the Commissioner's Cup quarterfinals, as they walloped the Bolts.

Sunday Salvacion tried to shoot the Bolts back in the game in the fourth quarter after Meralco trailed by 20 points. He made two huge triples to cut Rain or Shine's lead down to five, 93-88 with 1:28 left in the game. However, it was not enough as the Elasto Painters held on for the win.

RoS import Wayne Chism was named the Best Player of the Game with 27 points, seven rebounds, and five steals.

The action did not stop after the buzzer sounded as Rain or Shine head coach Yeng Guiao had some choice words for Cliff Hodge heading into the dugout, after the energetic sophomore forward committed a hard foul against Raymond Almazan.

"Kung ganun ang gusto nila, ganun rin ang gahawin namin. Mas matindi pa." said Guiao. "Cliff Hodge is hurting a lot of players. He's out there to hurt players.

"It's a very physical rugged game. There are somethings that need the attention of the league because its gotten out of control sometimes. It's not only us who are complaining of excessive physicality."

Rain or Shine did not dominate the game from the start as they only led 22-18 at the end of the first quarter.

The Elasto Painters slowly pulled away in the second period though. TY Tang knocked down a triple with 3:18 left in the first half tp give Rain or Shine its first double-digit lead at 40-30. Meralco tried to prevent the gap between the two sides from ballooning, but the Elasto Painters got quick buckets from Tang and Jeff Chan, good for a 49-32 lead at the half.

Wayne Chism led Rain or Shine with 10 points at the break while Jervy Cruz added eight. For Meralco, Darnell Jackson also got 10 points while Gary David added seven.

"We just wanted to come back strong," explained Guiao. "Our offense was just secondary."

Rain or Shine's lead grew even bigger as free throws from Chism and Chris Tiu got them a 20-point buffer, 57-37. With the Elasto Painters threatening to break the game wise open, Sunday Salvacion heated up from downtown as he rained three's to put the Bolts back in the game.

The streaky shooter nailed three triples in rapid succession as the third quarter ended with the Bolts down by just 11, 77-66.

Sensing that they already took Meralco's biggest punch, the Elasto Painters tried to pull away again in the fourth quarter. Beau Belga introduced himself to Meralco's import as he baited him with a shot fake and finished with a layup to establish an 86-70 lead.

However, like in the third quarter, the Bolts used their outside shooting to stay in the game. A three from Cliff Hodge and a jumper from Salvacion brought Rain or Shine's lead down to 10.

"We'll prepare for Saturday. We're more energetic in this game," Guiao closed. "Nakatulong yung in-between break. We have two days rest before Saturday at that's good for us." - AMD, GMA News
