Educating the Next Generation - LKYSPP 4th Anniversary Public Lecture
Speaker: Minister Ng Eng Hen, Minister for Education and Second Minister for Defence, Singapore

Singapores education system is well-regarded internationally. For the individual, we produce students who excel in the fundamentals. In Maths and Science, our students (10-14 year olds) top international comparisons of 49 countries (The 2003 Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study). Similarly we rank highly for reading and literacy skills among 40 countries (2006 Progress in International Reading Literacy Study). For the country, we produce competent professionals and a technical work force that is well-aligned with our economic strategies. More importantly, students have embraced core values of racial harmony, social equity, anti-corruption and meritocracy. Our system works. A recent McKinsey report held Singapore up as a model for other countries to emulate and how having good teachers has helped build up a top-performing education system. How did we get here and succeed? Were there trade-offs in other educational and social goals? Is this enough for new challenges on the horizon? What will be the emphases in educating the next generation? What will this lead to, for the individual and Singapore? Minister for Education, Dr Ng Eng Hen, will share his thoughts on our education journey thus far from a trading post and British colony with a polyglot society, through self government in 1959 till the present. He will identify the basics of a strong education system that were put in place and must be preserved. He will also chart the changes and new directions that are necessary to continually meet the needs of the future and the aspirations of Singaporeans.
