News Report:

MRT jam-packed during last hours of Holy Week operations

Passengers of the Metro Rail Transit experienced long queues and delayed trains during the Holy Week Exodus on Holy Wednesday as road reblocking projects along EDSA were underway, a report from GMA's “24-Oras” said.

According to MRT station division chief Oscar Bongon, they noticed a spike of passengers after the Metro Manila Development Authority announced the road reblocking projects on EDSA.

Bongon said the MRT only has a capacity of 350,000 per day but they service up to 600,000 passengers daily.

“Sa ngayon 'yun 'yung ating maximum dahil kulang 'yung ating capacity. So pag madadagdagan po natin 'yun pag maupgrade nga 'yung [railway] signalling at mayroon ng mga additional na bagon ng train,” he explained.

Although the MRT management anticipated an increase of passengers during the Holy Week, the road reblocking projects coupled with passengers expecting a quick trip to their provinces resulted in a surge of 'last minute' passengers.

Aside from this, the MRT has been running slow since its rails are not in best working condition resulting in a three-minute interval per train instead of the two-minute standard.

The MRT's last trip will only be up to 11 p.m. of Holy Wednesday to give way for maintenance of its trains and railway systems, the report said.

MRT operations will resume 4:30 a.m. Monday after the Holy Week. — Andrei Medina/ELR, GMA News
