News Report:

NBA: Knicks' Woodson anxious about future

Team president Phil Jackson said at his introductory press conference after meeting with head coach Mike Woodson that he would be considered when the New York Knicks determine who will be head coach in 2014-15.

Woodson, who met with Jackson in March, said Wednesday (Thursday, PHL time) as a disappointing regular season came to a close that he would like to return. Woodson has one year remaining on his contract worth $3.3 million.

"As a coach, I put myself in position to do the right thing and I think I have done the right thing unfortunately we had some misfortune in terms of injuries," Woodson said. "I never used that once as an excuse. Eventually when that time comes, they'll let me know what they want to do."

Reports linked former Chicago Bulls guard Steve Kerr, an NBA analyst for Turner Sports, and others with ties to Jackson as possible replacements for Woodson, who replaced coach Mike D'Antoni in an interim role in 2012 and guided the team to the playoffs last season.

"If they bring me back, I'm going to make damn sure this doesn't happen again," Woodson said. "I hope [I'll know] soon. There's been enough said about my job all year from you guys. Hopefully soon I'll know my destination on where I'm going to be."

Jackson laid out his desire to use the triangle offense as the linchpin of a team brand of basketball. Jackson spelled out in a radio appearance that he did have a "mental list" of candidates for the coaching job, based more on his experience in the game and knowledge of how certain people prepare.

Woodson, who wouldn't comment Wednesday (Thursday, PHL time) on any schedule for an exit interview or meeting with Jackson, believes he should still be the man for the job.

"I said this couple of weeks ago, Im the only guy for this job and I don't say that in a braggadocio way," Woodson said. "I've always said that. I feel good about what I do as a coach. I know the system works." - Reuters
