Golf: Lascuna falters in third round of Malaysian Open

KUALA LUMPUR — Antonio Lascuna went from wonderful to awful by turning in a five-over-par 77 spiked by a triple bogey and a double bogey, to lose grip of contention in the third round of the Maybank Malaysian Open at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club.
Four behind Englishman Lee Westwood at the halfway mark of the $2.75-M event, Lascuna came to within two nice birdies in the first three holes. However, an errant drive and an equally unlucky third shot gave him a triple bogey 8 on the par-5 No. 5.

While he cruised to pars from Nos. 6 to 10, a double bogey 5 on the par-3 11th did the most damage as he got out of rhythm, making three bogeys, a birdie, and three pars on the final seven holes. With that, he was at 212 to drop from second to tied for 23rd place.
“Inabot na ng malas sa bandang huli. Pero laban parin tayo,” Lascuna said, disappointed with his third day score.
Like Lascuna, Westwood also struggled a little as he saw his overnight lead sliced to only one by compatriot Andy Sullivan.
Westwood, who won the Malaysian Open in 1997, was at 14-under 202 after a 71. Sullivan had a 66 for 203 in the four-day championship co sanctioned by Asian Tour and European Tour.
Westwood dropped a bogey at the finishing hole as he battled hard to hold on to his overnight lead to stay in the hunt to end a two-year title drought, which dates back to the 2012 Nordea Masters in Sweden.
“It was really hot. That’s as hot as I’ve been on a golf course for quite some time. It was a real grind. I was leaking out there a little bit. You can get glazed up and lose your concentration quite easily. But I’m leading going into the last round so I’m quite happy with that,” said Westwood, who has won 12 times in the region.
Sullivan, 27, was delighted to set up a final day shootout against Westwood, whom he idolizes. The young Englishman made a big move highlighted by three straight birdies from the fifth hole after dropping his only shot on four. - AMD, GMA News
