News Report:

Peso strengthens after weak US data but stocks, yuan temper gains

The dollar turned sour on weak US data, giving the peso enough reason to gain some strengthen Thursday though tempered by the local stock market's decline and a weak Chinese yuan.
The local currency gained 1 centavo to 44.71:$1 from 44.72 Wednesday.
"The data that came out in the US last night weakened the dollar and somehow moved other currencies," First Grade Finance Inc. managing director Astro del Castillo told GMA News Online.
In a separate phone interview, a trader at a local bank said the peso strengthened intra-day due to weaker-than-expected PMI and housing data in the US.
The exchange rate opened at P44.73:$1 and reached a high of P44.66.
The dollar softened after a survey showed the manufacturing sector in the world's biggest economy expanded in April, but slower than expected while sales of US single-family homes in March fell to its lowest since July last year, Reuters reported.
However, the local currency tracked losses on the Philippine Stock Exchange and the weakness of China's yuan, the trader said.
"Trading in the stock market dipped and the Chinese yuan is still an issue. Its weakness prompted some dollar buying," the trader added.
The benchmark PSEi slipped by 0.56 percent as investors continued to pocket gains after the index reached 6,800-level and Wall Street declined overnight. – VS, GMA News
