News Report:

PLDT installs first TD-LTE infrastructure for P2B

Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT) on Thursday said it spent P2 billion to install the first Time-Division Duplex-Long Term Evolution (TD-LTE) sites from Cagayan in Northern Luzon to Davao del Sur in Mindanao.

The network technology is expected to bring high-speed wireless broadband to Filipino homes, and the sites support the efforts to cover the whole Philippines with broadband using fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) and Next Generation Network (NGN) services.

“We are using LTE-FDD for our mobile networks and TD-LTE for fixed wireless broadband services, running on separate frequency bands,” said Technology Group head Rolando Peña. “This ensures sufficient capacity for our fixed and mobile high-speed broadband services.”

Under the international standard of LTE, TD-LTE is one of two wireless data transmission technologies – the other, Frequency-Division Duplex (LTE FDD), is for mobile networks.

Industry data showed the company's TD-LTE network is one of the largest deployments in Asia Pacific with over 200 base stations and a bandwidth of 100 megabits per second (Mbps).

“This will surely transform the Filipino family’s internet experience by giving them ready access to multimedia services like social media, movies, games, and music,” Peña said.

PLDT is going to build more TD-LTE sites this year to reach the most remote Philippine areas.

“We are committed to bring internet access to each city and municipality in the country. TD-LTE will help us achieve that objective,” Peña said.

2014 capex

Aside from Metro Manila and Cebu, PLDT TD-LTE sites are also in Bulacan, Pampanga, Tarlac, Bataan, Isabela, Nueva Ecija, Pangasinan, Aurora, Cagayan, Abra, and Nueva Vizcaya in Northern and Central Luzon; Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Quezon, Sorsogon, and Palawan in Southern Luzon; Aklan, Iloilo, Negros Occidental, Bukidnon, and Leyte in the Visayas; and Misamis Oriental, Zamboanga del Sur, Agusan del Sur, Misamis Occidental, Lanao del Norte, and Sultan Kudarat in Mindanao.

“With maximum speeds per individual user of up to 42 Mbps, the ultra-fast TD-LTE is almost six times faster than WiMax and 21 times speedier than Canopy, and can serve more customers than both,” Peña noted.

The P2-billion investment is part and parcel of the P28.8-billion capital expenditures of the PLDT Group last year, which was intended to expand its fiber optics to 78,000 kilometers.

This year, PLDT raised its capex to P32 billion from P29 billion, after taking into consideration the impact of climate change in its operations. The telco suffered P900 million in damage from Typhoon Yolanda which barreled through Central Philippines last November.

The company said it will put base stations capable of withstanding at least 300-kilometer per hour winds in typhoon-prone places. – VS, GMA News
