News Report:

Pop icon Andy Warhol's computer art recovered from 'ancient' floppy disks

After 30 years, a forgotten dimension of pop art icon Andy Warhol was finally unveiled, after computer experts recovered his work on "ancient" floppy disks.

The Andy Warhol Museum said the newly rediscovered art works were experiments made by Warhol on an Amiga computer—and saved on Amiga floppies—in 1985.

Yet, it was a chance viewing of a YouTube clip of Warhol "painting" a portrait of singer-songwriter Debbie Harry that sparked the initiative to undertake the arduous recovery process:

"Warhol’s saved files, trapped on Amiga floppy disks held by The Warhol’s archives collection, were extracted by members of the Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) Computer Club and its Frank-Ratchye STUDIO for Creative Inquiry in a complex recovery process," the museum said.

The museum added that the Hillman Photography Initiative at Carnegie Museum of Art (CMOA) initiated and documented this process for its The Invisible Photograph series.

Among Warhol's digital works that were erstwhile trapped in the computer disks were Amiga versions of the iconic "Campbell's" and "Venus."

The museum said the artwork had been in The Warhol’s collection since 1994, many of the images on the disks had been inaccessible due to their obsolete format.

It posted a photo of the Commodore Amiga hardware used by Warhol in his works from 1985 to 1986 - ancient by today's standards.

On the other hand, the museum said its collection includes a letter with handwritten amendments by Warhol’s business manager, Fred Hughes, "which seems to have served as the contract between Warhol and Commodore International."

"Warhol saw no limits to his art practice. These computer generated images underscore his spirit of experimentation and his willingness to embrace new media - qualities which, in many ways, defined his practice from the early 1960s onwards," said Warhol Museum director Eric Shiner.

Doodles to classic images

Warhol’s Amiga experiments stemmed from a commission by Commodore International to demonstrate the computer’s graphic arts capabilities.

"They vary from doodles and camera shots of a desktop, to experimenting with Warhol’s classic images of a banana, Marilyn Monroe, Campbell’s soup, and portraits," the museum said.

The museum said the efforts to recover Warhol's computer works started after artist Cory Arcangel learned of Warhol's Amiga work from a YouTube clip.

The clip showed Warhol promoting the release of the Amiga 1000 in 1985.

When he visited Pittsburgh for his exhibition Masters in November 2011, Arcangel followed up the matter with curator Tina Kukielski.

Both then contacted CMU’s Frank-Ratchye STUDIO for Creative Inquiry, and were connected to the CMU Computer Club.

Arcangel and Kukielski in 2011 then discussed the possibility of searching for files on the disks with warhol chief archivist Matt Wrbican.

The extraction team met for the first time in March 2013 to read the disks, with a video crew from CMOA documenting the process. — Joel Locsin/TJD, GMA News
