V-League: Streaking Lady Agilas deal first loss to defending champs Lady Bulldogs

Davao's Princess Joy Oliveros finds a hole in the FEU defense. Jeff Venancio

Fresh from a thrilling five-set victory against the defending NCAA champs Perpetual Help Lady Altas on Tuesday, the Davao Lady Agilas then took down the reigning Shakey’s V-League 1st Conference champs, the NU Lady Bulldogs, in four sets, 25-20 30-28 14-25 32-30, Thursday at the FilOil Flying V Arena.

“Hindi namin akalain na talunin namin yung former champion ng Shakey’s V-League,” said head coach of the lone undefeated squad, Abet Bernan. He expressed that his team was playing with full confidence and carried no burden with them in this match. “Walang pressure sa atin, basta maglaro lang kayo. Wala naman mawawala sa atin kung sakaling matalo.”

The Lady Agilas, who just started playing in the tourney last week, boast of a 3-0 card. NU slips down to 4-1 in Group B.

The first set opened up with both squads exchanging deadlocks. Each Myla Pablo attack was followed by a Venus Flores front-row kill. The score eventually boiled down to a 20-all deadlock due to a well-positioned hit by Carmina Aganon. Unfortunately for the experienced Lady Bulldog squad, a series of unforced errors on their part opened up a huge scoring run for the Lady Agilas.

Back-to-back outside hits by Pablo and Dindin Santiago sealed the 5-0 offensive outburst of Davao and gave the Lady Agilas the first set at 25-20.

The succeeding set opened with the guest team in full control as they burst out to an 8-2 start. Reynelen Raterta sparked the Lady Agilas with proper ball distribution and a couple of deceptive tips that startled the NU defense. The Lady Bulldogs however retaliated with a string of running spikes. NU was able to come from behind and tie the set at 23-all with an Aiko Urdas kill.

The energy the Lady Bulldogs piled up gave them four set point opportunities, but all of them fell short to the Lady Agilas. A down the line kill followed by a deceptive tip wrapped up by May Shiel Agton gave Davao the set point advantage at 29-28. Davao survived the late NU surge as Santiago overshot an open spike that ended the set at 30-28.

The third set however proved to be an all-Lady Bulldog attack as they entered the first technical timeout with an 8-1 buffer. Urdas, Pablo and Santiago continued to shine in their offensive game, while Agton and Flores were constantly denied by the wall-like NU defense. The Lady Bulldogs piled up a 10-point advantage at 17-7 and cruised to a 25-14 finish, care of a crafty drop shot of Santiago.

The fourth set seemed to be another NU victory, as they got a strong start, 8-4, by the technical timeout. But the Lady Agilas held on and managed to tie things with Angel Antipuesto’s resiliency to craft plays from the front row. The Lady Agilas were able to pull out a three-point lead at 23-20, before a series of unforced error tied the set at 23-all. The ga,e turned into a thriller as both teams exchanged points as the trio of Agton, Antipuesto and Tapic frustrated the Lady Bulldogs. NU though collapsed, as an unlikely Princess Olivares desperation dig crossed the net and startled the Lady Bulldogs defenders.

Despite the veteran swipe off the block by Aganon to give NU the set point at 30-29, the errors on the Lady Bulldog’s part gave the opportunity for Davao to take command and seal the win at 32-30.

The scoring skills department featured a tightly-contested bout as NU slipped away with the 57-56 advantage in points won via attacks. The Lady Bulldogs also had a 34-33 lead in terms of points off errors.

NU’s scoring duo of Santiago and Urdas produced 18 and 17 points respectively, but they came up short despite the NU squad tallying a 103-101 total score of the match.

Raterta finished the match with a team-high of 24 excellent sets that can be attributed to the well-balanced scoring of Davao. Agton finished with a game-high 21 points, followed by Tapic, Flores and Antipuesto with 13, 12 and 10 respectively.  - AMD, GMA News
