News Report:

Golf: Lasunca five back after day one of Malaysian Open

KUALA LUMPUR - Antonio Lascuna posted a two-under-par 70 and was among nine others at joint 18th place, five back from clubhouse leader Lee Westwood of England after the rain-delayed first round of the $2.75M Maybank Malaysian Open.

A total of 42 players will resume their rounds early morning Friday after the tournament, co-sanctioned by Asian Tour and European Tour, was suspended for more than an hour due to heavy downpour.

Birdies on 5, 8 and 14 got him to three-under with five holes to play. However, he dropped one back on the 15th, then cruised to pars in the last three holes for that 70 at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club.

What really set the tone for Lascuna was him hitting the fairways 10 out of 14 times and only putting in 29 strokes. He will have to improve on making it to the greens in regulation to keep up with Westwood.

“I was doing good until that bogey on No. 15.  My goal is to make the cut first,” said Lascuna in Filipino.

Elmer Salvador, the only other Filipino in the field after Angelo Que pulled out of the event because wife Tracy gave birth on Monday, led seven others who share seventh place with one-under 71s.

Salvador made three birdies in the outward nine but he had three bogeys, too. A super late birdie on the 18th gave him that 71 and a chance for the $495,000 champion’s cash prize.

He putted better than Lascuna although Salvador was only good for 50 percent of greens in regulation and 57 percent in placing his drives on the fairways of KLGCC’s West course.

“It has been up and down, good and bad. When I make a good one, I commit a mistake on another hole,” Salvador also said in Filipino.

Westwood, meanwhile, birdied that final three holes for a seven-under-par 65 to continue his wonderful play dating back to last week’s Masters Tournament.

Westwood leads by one stroke from 2012 Ryder Cup teammate Nicolas Colsaerts of Belgium while Michael Hoey of Northern Ireland and Ricardo Santos of Portugal were a further two shots back. - AMD, GMA News
