BOI approves two coconut-based export projects worth P130.8M by Korean investors

The Board of Investments (BOI) approved P130.8 million worth of investments by two Korean companies to manufacture coconut products in the Philippines for export to the United States, China, and South Korea.
Coco Davao Inc. and Cocoplus Inc. were given the green light as producers and exporters of coconut water concentrate and coconut fiber and peat, respectively.
With a P125 million, Coco Davao expects to produce 2.16 million liters of coconut water a year at its Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur factory.
Cocoplus Inc., on the other hand, will set up a P5.8-million factory in Digos City, Davao del Sur. The facility will have an annual capacity of 1,757 tons of coco fiber and 2,635 tons of coco peat.
Both companies will export 100 percent of their products, with Coco Davao shipping to the United States and Cocoplus to China and South Korea.
Combined, the factories are expected to provide 215 jobs when fully operational.
Data from the Philippine Statistics Authority showed Philippine exports amounted to $4.38 billion in January 2014, up 9.3 percent from a year earlier.
Shipments of manufactured goods accounted for $3.786 billion or 86.4 percent of total exports, with  agriculture-based products accounting for $2.77 million or 6.3 percent.
Coconut production last year reached 15.34 million metric tons (MT), down 3.3 percent from 15.86 million MT a year earlier, Bureau of Agricultural Statistics data showed. – Rie Takumi/VS, GMA News
