PBA: Rain or Shine hangs on in OT, sends Ginebra to eighth place

2013 third overall pick Raymond Almazan of Rain or Shine (R) eludes the defense of 2013 first overall pick Greg Slaughter of Ginebra. Nuki Sabio

(Updated 8:12pm) The Rain or Shine Elasto Painters got a break when Greg Slaughter missed two go-ahead free throws at the tailend of the fourth quarter. They took full advantage of it by defeating the Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings 105-101 in overtime, Sunday night at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

The win by the Elasto Painters gave them a 5-4 record, and a best-of-three series against the Meralco Bolts. Ginebra on the other hand was doomed to eighth place, up against the undefeated Talk 'N Text Tropang Texters, who are armed with a twice-to-beat advantage.

In the other pairings, San Miguel Beermen, who have the other twice-to-beat edge, play the Air21 Express, while the Alaska Aces and the San Mig Coffee Mixers, who played tonight's curtain-opener, do battle again, with each team needing two wins to advance.

Wayne Chism and Paul Lee started the overtime period with back-to-back baskets to put Rain or Shine ahead, 98-94, producing a lead they would not relinquish. Baskets from Mark Caguiao and Gabe Freeman were neutralized by a dunk from Gabe Norwood and two free throws from Jervy Cruz.

A free throw from Lee settled the final score to deal the Kings a uphill climb in the quarterfinals. Barangay Ginebra finished the 2014 PBA Philippine Cup at the top of the standings, but now they will have to claw their way to out of the bottom.

“We got the stops we needed in the end game,” said Rain or Shine head coach Yeng Guiao. “This is what we wanted: a balanced offensive threat. This where we wanted to be: in quarters on an even matchup without any disadvantage and we got it.”

The loss was a painful pill to swallow for the returning import Freeman, who tallied 29 points, grabbed 17 rebounds, and dished out six assists in 44 minutes on the floor.

Freeman reminded the PBA why he was a beloved import with the San Miguel Beermen before. Now playing for Ginebra after the sudden departure of Josh Powell, the two-time PBA Best Import awardee started like a house on fire. He amassed 17 points, going 7-of-8 from the field, and four rebounds in the first 12 minutes. But more than that, it was his intensity that was key for the Kings, as it rubbed off on all of his teammates.

Freeman blocked Wayne Chism’s shot which led to a Jayjay Helterbrand three to knot the count at 19-all for Ginebra. Greg Slaughter then gave the Kings a two-point lead with a basket at the 4:02 mark of the first.

Mark Caguioa ended the first quarter with a triple to give Ginebra a 30-20 lead.

“Gabe Freemen was a matchup problem as we expected but Chism showed what he could do,” added Guiao after the victory. “The win gives us lot of confidence because lots of people doubted our import. But I and the rest of the team believe in him.”

Chism led all scorers with 30 points in the game. He also added 15 rebounds, two assists, two steals, and a whopping five blocks. Paul Lee backed him up with 25 points While Beau Belga and Cruz added 10 each.

Belga refused to allow the Kings from breaking the game open as he connected with a triple to open the second period. He quickly added two free throws to cut the Ginebra lead in half, 30-25.

The Kings however rebuilt their double-digit lead with eight minutes left in the second with a triple from Dylan Ababou.

Ginebra looked like it was on its way to holding a double-digit lead at the break but Chism completed an and-one play to cut Ginebra’s lead down to eight at 50-42.

The Elasto Painters rallied in the third quarter to cut Ginebra’s lead down to just two points. It was the perfect set-up for a crazy wind-up in the final game of the 2014 PBA Commissioner’s Cup.

Slaughter scored the go-ahead basket for Ginebra to lead 94-92. However, Belga was fouled on an unlikely alley-oop attempt with 43 seconds left in the crucial game. With the pressure on his broad shoulders, Belga calmly sank two free throws to knot the score at 94-all.

Ginebra got multiple chances to win the game and enter the quarterfinals as the sixth seed. They had a golden opportunity as Slaughter was fouled, but he missed both his free throws. The two teams had one chance each in winning the game in regulation but Rain or Shine turned the ball over, while Ginebra missed on their final attempt. - AMD, GMA News
