News Report:

3 missing as floods submerge Eastern Visayas villages

At least three people were reported missing in the wake of floods and landslides that hit Eastern Visayas in past days, the Office of Civil Defense reported.

State-run Philippines News Agency quoted OCD regional assistant operations officer Angelo Bacho as saying the three were aboard a pumpboat that left Monday afternoon.

"The pump boat was expected to arrive at the Limasawa port after three hours, but it is still missing until today," Bacho was quoted in the PNA report as saying.

He cited initial information indicating the pumpboat named "Cloe" left for Limasawa from Padre Burgos in Southern Leyte Monday afternoon.

Aboard it were Joey Senoc, his wife, and six-month-old baby.

Bacho said a Surigao-bound ship was stranded for two days in in Guiuan, Eastern Samar.

He said the sea vessel went to Guiuan to carry trucks loaded with relief items for survivors of super typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan), which had devastated Visayas last November.

Meanwhile, the PNA quoted Oras, Eastern Samar town Mayor Viviane Alavarez as saying several villages in Oras were under water due to heavy rain since Monday.

Among the flooded villages were Agsam, Naga, Trinidad, Bantayan, Iwayan, Minap-os, Alangalang, Cadian, Cagdine, Batang, Buntay, Rizal, Cagtoog, Capile, Gamot, and Balingasag.

The report said some 1,800 families in low-lying areas have been affected by flooding.

Also, the PNA cited reports of river flows in low-lying areas of Maslog and Jipapad towns in Eastern Samar, with the flooding triggered also by high sea water levesl.

Floods also closed down traffic flow in a portion of the national road in Barangay Pililay, Lapaz, Leyte.

Bacho said clearing operations are ongoing in a portion of the national road in Kahupian village in Sogod, Southern Leyte; Barangays Villa and Liberation in Baybay City; and Barangay Uguis in Mahaplag, Leyte.  — Joel Locsin/ELR, GMA News
