News Report:

As Holy Week nears end, Easter scams circulate online

As the Holy Week nears its end, cyberscammers have started targeting victims with Easter-related rackets, a security vendor said Friday.

Bitdefender said the scams come in the form of spam mail offering fake vouchers, personal loans, replica watches and dubious candy surveys.

"Users are invited to discover God’s plan with their life in one moment and are tempted with holiday Viagra offers the next," Bitdefender's Bianca Stanescu said in a blog post.

Stanescu said some fraudsters even make up fake charities, such as the bogus "Society for Integrative Oncology" that awaits donations.

The fake website asks visitors to “(p)lease contribute as much as your means will allow,” adding it allows payments via PayPal.

But in reality, she said those behind the scam can steal $50 to $3,500 and personal details from victims, who may be left vulnerable to identity theft.

"Banking information stolen during the attack includes card numbers, security codes and expiration dates," she added.

"Participating in dubious surveys for Easter candy or Walmart rewards may also relieve victims of their personal details and savings right before the holidays," Stanescu said.

Fake holiday websites

Meanwhile, Stanescu said other fraudsters have created a fake holiday website "that allegedly allows users to rent an apartment in countries such as the US, the UK, Portugal, France or Malta."

Easter tourists are also targeted via spam with Safari itineraries, she said.

Bitdefender reminded users to stay away from holiday scams by:

- Not clicking on shipping notifications from e-mail addresses you have never heard of – they may be phishing scams or contain malware, especially if they come with attachments.

- Avoiding donating “likes” and money on social networks such as Facebook, where scammers promote fake charitable cases.

- Avoiding requests for charitable contributions via e-mail, which may be phishing scams. Donate to an organization that you trust.

- Not opening electronic greeting cards, which may contain Trojans or other malware.

- Being careful when shopping online for Easter. Check your secured “https” connection and make sure the online shop doesn’t redirect to a dubious payment gateway.

- Avoiding shopping from unsecured Wi-Fi connections, which may let hackers access your credentials and banking information.

- Installing an antivirus solution and keeping it updated.
