PBA: San Mig Coffee completes comeback, forces do-or-die with Alaska for semis berth

(Updated 8:17pm) The San Mig Coffee Mixers are not ready to end their two-conference title reign just yet.

The Mixers leaned on a 16-0 run in the fourth quarter to overhaul the Alaska Aces' lead, and win, 70-65, on Wednesday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum, thus forcing a sudden death game three in their 2014 PBA Commissioner's Cup quarterfinals series.

Alaska, which had beaten San Mig Coffee in back-to-back games, Sunday in their elimination round game and Monday in their first quarterfinals match, suffered from an eight minute scoring drought in the fourth quarter to allow the Mixers to climb back into the game and ultimately get the win.

After jumping out to an 8-7 lead early in the first quarter, the Mixers fell behind for most of the game as Alaska played like the defending conference champions. When they finally grabbed a six-point lead late in the game, the Philippine Cup Finals Most Valuable Player Mark Barroca stepped up to make a long two that gave the Mixers a 65-57 lead. Joe Devance then added a one-hander with 1:17 left in the game for San Mig Super Coffee’s first double-digit advantage of the series.

Triples from Dondon Hontiveros and JVee Casio gave the Avcs a sliver of hope, but free throws from Devance and Alex Mallari put the game away for good for the Mixers to force a do-or-die game on Friday or Saturday for the right to face the winner between Friday's San Miguel Beer-Air21 match.

Marc Pingris was named the Best Player of the Game with 17 points, 12 rebounds, and two blocks.

“Hindi ko na inisip yung sakin,” said Pingris who was nursing injured ribs. “Pag inisip mo, mas nawawala yung laro mo e. Bahala na si Lord kung anong gusto niya para sa amin pero ako gusto ko lang manalo. Ilalabas naming kung ano yung puso ng San Mig Coffee.”

Alaska started the game with a 5-0 run from Jvee Casio and Dozier but the Mixers were able to take an 8-7 lead after a triple from James Yap. This lead however did not last long for the Mixers as Alaska took a 16-12 advantage after the first quarter.

In the second period, a triple from RJ Jazul gave Alaska a 25-14 lead. After failing to score a single point in the first 12 minutes, San Mig Super Coffee import James Mays finally got on the scoring tally with a free throw at the 4:09 mark. Jazul continued to shoot well as another triple gave the Aces a 30-18 lead. The first half ended with Alaska still on top, 36-24.

Alaska’s Rob Dozier already had 17 points at the half while his San Mig Super counterpart Mays only had five.

“We just grinded out pure and simple. It’s hard to find gap in Alaska’s defense,” said San Mig Super Coffee head coach Tim Cone after the game. “They're so solid. They're frustrating to play with. We just stayed there and grinded it out.”

The Mixers showed at the start of the second half that they were not going without a fight. Mark Barroca started the third by making two free throws and James Yap followed with a triple to cut the Alaska lead down to seven at 36-29 with 9:55 left in the quarter. Two free throws from Marc Pingris ate into the lead further, down to five points, until Dozier scored Alaska’s first points of the third for a 38-31 count.

The Mixers continued to claw their way back into the game in the third canto as two free throws from the banged up Pingris got them to within two point at 56-54. Simon’s free throws knotted the count at 46-all.

The game was deadlocked anew at 49-all after triple from Dondon Hontiveros and Joe Devance. A free throw from Dozier gave the Aces a 50-49 lead heading into the payoff period.

“Whether we can do it again, I hope so. They are defending at championship level without a doubt. Dozier and Thoss are a top combo to play against,” Cone added. “Somehow we won it. I’m just not sure how but we won it.”

Knowing that the Mixers were not going to fold that easily, the Aces went into the fourth quarter with a renewed focus. Hontiveros started with a three-point play and Cyrus Baguio quickly followed up with a layup for a 55-49 lead.

But the gritty Mixers again refused to fade quietly. Another comeback attempt culminated with a three-point play from Barroca to give the Mixers a 58-57 with 5:42 left in the game clock. Yap then added a one-hander to build their biggest lead at three points with less than four minutes left in the game.

Mays then made his presence felt late in the game as he made three free throws for a 63-57 lead.

After being limited to 24 points in the first half, it was the Mixers’ turn to play great defense in the second half as they allowed Alaska only 29 points in the last 24 minutes. The statistics were basically even on all accounts but the big difference was the Mixers got their baskets at the best time possible.

“Hopefully, this is something will give us some confidence and make us play a little bit more energetic,” Cone closed as he now awaits for the result of the night’s second game before knowing if they will play their next do-or-die game on Friday or Saturday."  - AMD, GMA News
