All eyes will be on Miami's troika of stars. Can the team reincorporate Dwyane Wade without losing a step? Mike Segar / Reuters

The Dwyane Wade Maintenance Program is done. The grind begins.

For the Miami Heat, the slog through the regular season never seemed so listless. Keeping Wade off the pine on back-to-back games, the two-time defending champions coasted through ecstatic highs (buzzer-beating victories against Portland and Golden State) and nerve-wracking lows (losses to Philadelphia and Detroit).

Teasing and toying around with the idea of nabbing the top seed in the East, the Heat eventually threw away their last two games in the hope of giving LeBron James and Chris Bosh some much-needed rest.

It is time to flip the switch.

Acclimating the trio of stars back together might have some bumps along the way. The last time Miami won with all three playing significant minutes dates back to March 21 when they outlasted the Memphis Grizzlies, 91-86.

James continues to produce MVP numbers and relishes playing against the Bobcats. In the teams’ fourth meeting, he scored a career-high 61 points and rendered Michael Kidd-Gilchrist as ineffective as an orange traffic cone on defense. But too many times this season, James has received inadequate and inconsistent support from the Heat's other rotation players.

Chris Bosh has not materialized into the second option many hoped he would be with Wade sidelined for a third of the season. Bosh’s numbers are nowhere near the ones he put up back in Toronto and actually dipped from last season. To compound the issue, the point guard duo of Mario Chalmers and Norris Cole alternate between decent and mediocre games, and have yet to find a sustained rhythm and flow together.

Miami’s small-ball, perimeter-based system took a backseat this season as Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra tinkered around with different units to flank his best players, producing mixed results. In spite of the change in philosophy, the Heat still rank dead last in rebounding with 36.9 a game, giving up nearly four more boards to the opposition.

By the same token though, Miami continues to be one of the tightest teams patrolling the passing lanes, hounding opponents for 8.9 steals a game, ranking second in the league. And when it comes to transition, the Heat happens to employ two of the best finishers in the game.

Here is something clear though: the Heat will not enter the postseason unscathed. Wade is still getting his groove back from the sore hamstring that forced him to miss nine straight games, Michael Beasley turned his right ankle in the season finale, while Greg Oden remains day-to-day with back issues.

Big man Al Jefferson has dominated the low block this season, but will it be enough against the Heat? Jeremy Brevard-USA TODAY Sports / Reuters

Charlotte makes its second appearance in the playoffs as it continues to seek its first postseason victory. The bruising presence of Al Jefferson has had a thorough impact on the team from top to bottom, turning the team’s defensive efficiency from the league’s worst in 2013 to the sixth-best in 2014.

Not since the days of Emeka Okafor has Charlotte had a legitimate post presence. Jefferson will be a tough assignment and it will be interesting to see how Oden, Chris Andersen, and Udonis Haslem take turns in keeping Charlotte’s big man out of the shaded area.

Kemba Walker’s playoff debut will merit significant airtime. His explosiveness and championship pedigree has the potential of swinging a game in this series. Averaging over 17 points and six assists, he gives the Bobcats a clear edge on the point guard position, thus keeping Miami’s back line on high alert for his repeated slashes to the basket. Along with Gerald Henderson’s high-flying antics, the Bobcats have a formidable backcourt pairing to contend with.

Bobcats Head Coach Steve Clifford could opt to go big in the hopes of drawing early fouls from the likes of Bosh and Andersen, decimating Miami’s frontline right from the start. How much Josh McRoberts and Anthony Tolliver bring at the power forward spot could spell the difference between a close game and a blowout in the dying minutes of the fourth quarter.

The Bobcats are no pushovers and they will give the Heat an early wake-up call that the title defense begins way before the Eastern Conference Finals.

Prediction: Heat in 5
